Minecraft 15th Anniversary at Alexandria Palace

Overview

For the 15th anniversary of Minecraft, Creative Giants aimed to create a spectacular and memorable installation that would capture the essence of the iconic game. They envisioned a large-scale replica of a Minecraft block, which would serve as the central piece for their celebration event at Alexandra Palace. This interactive cube created the opportunity for local guests and fans to come along and take part in the reveal of the artwork designed especially for the event.

Challenges:

The scale of the display measuring 6×6 meters was a key feature for Creative Giants to make the event a success. The structure had to be easily recognizable as a Minecraft block, it needed to be visually impactful and meet with health and safety regulation. Alexandria Palace is an historic venue visited daily by members of the public; our aim was to ensure minimal disruption for new and regular visitors. Due to the age of the site, over time the surface of the ground has become uneven which presented a challenge for the installation and structural integrity of the display.

Solutions:

We designed a framework that could support the large panel area and had it verified by structural engineers in accordance with UKCA standards (BS EN 1090). In accordance with the design we then manufactured the steel framework which provided the necessary support and durability. The weather-resistant panels were used to ensure the block could withstand outdoor conditions. The large components were transported in sections and assembled on-site. Modular construction allowed for efficient assembly and disassembly. We ensured the ground was levelled and stable, with appropriate load bearing supports.

Benefits:

The design, manufacture, and installation of the giant Minecraft block at Alexandria Palace was a success!
The iconic Minecraft block stood as the centrepiece allowing the anniversary celebrations to begin. Drawing attention and excitement from visitors and fans, it provided a perfect photo opportunity for all social media platforms, along with the interactive features, offered an immersive Minecraft experience. The project celebrated the significant Minecraft milestone and demonstrated the power of creative design and planning to bring a large installation to life.
